Hera Gallery is proud to present In God We Trust: Reflections on Religion in America, a national juried exhibition curated by Nezka Pfeifer, curator of the Stephen and Peter Sachs Museum at the Missouri Botanical Garden in St. Louis, MO. The exhibition will take place at Hera Gallery, at 10 High Street in Wakefield, RI, from October 12th to November 6th, 2019. The public is invited to attend the Opening Reception on Saturday, October 12th from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. The Gallery will also hold a talk by the curator Wednesday, October 23rd, at 7p.m to discuss the curatorial process, the conceptualization of the exhibition, and the selected works.
The exhibition, In God We Trust: Reflections on Religion in America, is an exploration of both the diversity and ubiquity of faith in America, and the complex ways in which religion intersects with American culture. At the junction of religion and culture in America, contemporary and historical issues of race, gender, politics, economics, law, medicine and science have been informed by faith. Religion has been used to justify cultural phenomena whose impacts have had both positive and negative consequences. Religion has been used to justify oppression, xenophobia, racism, sexism, and classism; yet it has also been a force of social good through community building, offering hope in dark times and providing a counterpoint to oppression.
In collaboration with the 2019 Honors Colloquium at the University of Rhode Island, In God We Trust exhibits artwork in all media that reflects the diversity of all religions, its adherents and its effects on American culture. A total of 211 pieces of artwork were submitted. 39 pieces including photographs, collages, paintings, sculpture, jewelry, video, and installation were selected to participate in the exhibition by artists from 20 different states.
