ISABEL NAGY

As an artist, I am heavily influenced by horror and human fear. I take inspiration from artists such as Junji Ito and Zdzislaw Beksinski, who create works utilizing dark subject matter and disturbing imagery. I am fascinated with an artist’s ability to evoke fear. In horror films, fear is often built over an extended period of time with the use of lighting, audio, and plot. With a painting or sculpture, however, the emotion is much more immediate for the viewer and can therefore be very powerful.

I am also interested in fashion and the idea that one can be perceived in a multitude of different ways depending on how they choose to decorate themselves with clothing. This series is a collection of acrylic paintings on various garments of clothing with the addition of a fabric medium. I want to transform these everyday articles of clothing like jeans and sweatshirts, which most people would not think twice about, and turn them into something unsettling. I am interested in exploring how my “canvases” influence my subject matter through their shape and function as a garment, as well as consider visual elements of horror that are able to evoke a visceral sense of fear in the audience.
